Anyone who's ever tried to reduce processed sugar from their diet will testify that it's a hard habit to break. It’s especially challenging when we’ve formed emotional attachments to foods such as cakes and sweets as being rewards for good behaviour and achievements. So it should come as no surprise that over the course of our lives we would turn to sugar whenever we felt a little down on ourselves; giving rise to sugar cravings and mood swings which impact our emotions, stress and anxiety levels. Sugar, which can boost the levels of serotonin in the brain, acting as a happiness booster, steps in to make everything better. Until we need it again. And again. And again.
So, what’s to be done about it? Plenty. Whilst breaking habits entirely can be a challenge it’s easier to form better ones. Switching from sweet to savoury snacking is a step in the right direction. But often savoury foods such as crisps carry high fat and salt content which you can become equally reliant on.
We humbly suggest that you take small steps daily towards weakening bad habits. Firstly, we recommend not buying high-sugar foods if you’re attempting to break away from them. If it’s not within easy reach you cannot eat it. However, we don’t recommend that you skip meals and eat less than you need. We are simply enforcing that you eat better and snack better.
